Beyond guac: discovering the versitility of avocados

~Avocados have long been associated with being part of a healthy diet, due to its abundance of healthy fats and other essential nutrients. This green fruit has surged in popularity in the past few years, so much so that it has its own niche brunch item: avocado toast. To be honest, I was skeptical about avo toast at first, but when I eventually tried it, I became its newest fan. I like my avo toast on a bagel sprinkled with garlic salt.

I also make this amazing (and very addictive) avocado dip that I got the recipe from my mom, who got it from a friend of hers. You can find it here in Recipes.

I knew that avocados were rich in monsaturated fats (aka good fats), but as I continued my research on the superfood, I learned that avocado benefits extend further that just the fruit itself. In 1001 Natural Remedies by DK, remedy #449 features a avocado & lemon treatment aimed to soften rough skin on elbows and knees using the avocado peel.

  • Half the avocado and scoop out most of the flesh, leaving a shell
  • Sprinkle a bit of lemon juice on the inside of the shell
  • Rub the inside of the shell for a couple minutes
  • Rinse with warm water

The newest extention of avocados I most recently discovered was avocado oil. Avocado oil has similar health benefits of the avocado fruit, but what makes the oil unique is its high smoke point (over 500 degrees Fahrenheit!). I was fortunate enough to find avocado oil at Walmart of all places. One night I decided to make bison steaks by pan searing them in avocado oil, to achieve a perfect sear. Not only did I get a good sear on the steaks, my trusty copper pan got scorched 😦
Luckily with some Dawn dish soap and a little elbow grease, the pan’s good as new!

I found a great article from Farmers’ Almanac that expertly highlights the benefits of avocado oil! https://www.farmersalmanac.com/ten-amazing-benefits-of-avocado-oil-21992
